COVID-19 Patients With Cancer in New York City Have a High Death Rate – Cancer Health Treatment News

COVID-19 patients with cancer appear to have a higher rate of death than those without cancer, but the risk varies widely by cancer type, according recent study by researchers at Montefiore Health System in the Bronx in the New York City, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in the United States.

Our findings emphasize the need to prevent cancer patients from contracting COVID-19 andif they doto identify and closely monitor these individuals for dangerous symptoms, lead study author Vikas Mehta, MD, MPH, of Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein Medical College said in a press release. We hope that our findings can inform states and communities that have not yet been so severely struck by this pandemic about the unique vulnerability cancer patients face.

The latest results were published May 1 in the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) journal Cancer Discovery. Earlier in the week, the AACRs virtual annual meeting featured a special session on COVID-19 and cancer, which included reports of outcomes among cancer patients with COVID-19 in China, Italy, France and Spain. Louis Voight, MD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, gave an overview of COVID-19 in the United States, with a focus on racial and ethnic disparities, but that talk did not include detailed patient outcome findings.

Early reports from China, where the coronavirus pandemic originated in late December, showed that older people, those with compromised immune systems and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to severe COVID-19. One study saw a death rate of 6% for people with cancermore than twice as high as the overall COVID-19 mortality rate in China.

There are several reasons why people with cancer might be at greater risk. Many are older and have coexisting health conditions. Chemotherapy medications and some targeted therapies for cancer can cause neutropenia, a temporary depletion of immune system white blood cells that fight infection. People who receive bone marrow stem cell transplants or CAR-T therapy or for blood cancers are at especially high risk.

Vikas Mehta, MD, of Albert Einstein Medical College in New York City, and colleagues identified 218 COVID-19 patients with cancer, mostly from the Bronx, treated in the Montefiore Health System between March 18 and April 8, 2020. Many had been exposed to the coronavirus in healthcare settings, including nursing homes and hospitals. Three quarters had solid tumors and a quarter had blood cancers. Most were not currently on cancer treatment.

Of these, 61 (28%) died of COVID-19. Mortality rates were 37% for those with blood cancers and 25% for those with any solid tumor. People with blood cancers were also more likely to be admitted to the ICU (26% versus 19%, respectively), but about equally likely to be put on a ventilator (11% versus 10%).

Severe lung damage in people with COVID-19 may be caused by an overactive immune response known as a cytokine storm, in which the immune system goes into overdrive and releases large amounts of chemical messengers such as interleukin 6 (IL-6). The study authors suggested that people with blood cancers may be more susceptible to cytokine-mediated inflammation due to disruption of various types of immune cells. Researchers are now testing whether the IL-6 blocker Actemra (tocilizumab)a medication used to treat immune-mediated side effects in people receiving checkpoint inhibitors or CAR-T therapycan prevent or calm the cytokine storm in people with COVID-19.

Looking at the solid tumors, people with pancreatic cancer (67%), lung cancer (55%), and colorectal or gynecological malignancies (both 38%) had elevated death rates, while those with prostate cancer (20%) or breast cancer (14%) had lower mortality. People with advanced metastatic cancer had a trend toward higher mortality, but this did not reach statistical significance.

Comparing these numbers against death rates among people of the same age without cancer in the same health system and in the city as a whole, the researchers concluded, Cancer patients demonstrate a markedly increased COVID-19 mortality rate compared to non-cancer and all New York City COVID-19 patients. In fact, case fatality rates were two to three times higher among people with cancer compared to those without cancer.

The researchers acknowledged that socioeconomic disparities affecting people in the Bronx might contribute to the high death rates seen in this study. Black people, in particular, are increasingly recognized as having worse COVID-19 outcomes, accounting for 33% of all hospital admissions while making up just 13% of the U.S. population. But in this analysis, the racial/ethnic distribution of COVID-19 patients reflected that of the surrounding community.

In this analysis, current chemotherapy or radiation therapy were not linked to increased mortality, unlike the associations seen in some other cancer and COVID-19 studies. Very few patients were on immunotherapy, and it also did not show an association with mortality.

A key element is that mortality appears to be more closely related to frailty, age and co-morbidities than to active therapy for cancer, said Balazs Halmos, MD, of Albert Einstein Medical College, one of the senior authors.

Our data suggest that we should not stop lifesaving cancer therapies, but rather develop strategies to minimize potential COVID-19 exposures and re-evaluate therapies for our most vulnerable cancer populations, added co-senior authorAmit Verma, MBBS, also from Einstein.

Wilson to receive Norton Medal – UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff – University at Buffalo Reporter

Campus News

The Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal is UB's highest honor. Photo: Douglas Levere

UBNOW STAFF

Mary Wilson, wife of the late Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson and a strong advocate of Western New York for the past 29 years, will be awarded the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal, UBs highest honor.

Jean Wactawski-Wende, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology, dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professionals, and an internationally recognized researcher on womens health issues, will receive the UB Presidents Medal in recognition of extraordinary service to the university.

SUNY honorary doctorates are being presented to UB alumna Donnica L. Moore, president of the Sapphire Womens Health Group, and Richard A. Schatz, research director of cardiovascular interventions at the Scripps Heart, Lung and Vascular Center.

Wactawski-Wende will receive the Presidents Medal during the School of Public Health and Health Professions virtual commencement ceremony on May 16; the other award recipients will receive their honors at a later date.

The Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal is presented annually in public recognition of a person who has, in Nortons words, performed some great thing which is identified with Buffalo a great civic or political act, a great book, a great work of art, a great scientific achievement or any other thing which, in itself, is truly great and ennobling, and which dignifies the performer and Buffalo in the eyes of the world.

Announcing this years Norton Medal recipient, Jeremy M. Jacobs, chair of the UB Council, said that Mary Wilson richly deserves the honor for her longstanding commitment to the region.

This year, we were absolutely unanimous in our decision to honor Mary Wilson, he said. In her leadership of the Wilson Foundation, Mary is making an enduring and unprecedented impact on Buffalo and all of Western New York, which will be felt for many generations to come. Her dedication and work align perfectly with the spirit of the Norton Medal.

Wilson has been devoted to Western New York since she first arrived in the area for the Bills home opener in 1990. She has spent many years developing her Western New York Girls in Sports program, which biannually brings more than 200 9- to 12-year-old girls together to take part in various sports taught by young athletes from local universities and sports clubs. The program, now ensured to run in perpetuity, is organized by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County through an endowment from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, of which Wilson serves as one of four life trustees.

She has also supported organizations benefiting communities in Buffalo, Erie County and Southeast Michigan, among them Hospice of Western New York, WNY Womens Foundation, Food Bank of Western New York, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Girl Scouts of Western New York, the SPCA serving Erie County, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Alzheimers Association Greater Michigan Chapter, The Helm (formerly Services for Older Citizens), the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Historical Society and the Detroit Institute of Arts, to name a few.

The UB Presidents Medal, first presented in 1990, recognizes outstanding scholarly or artistic achievements, humanitarian acts, contributions of time or treasure, exemplary leadership or any other major contribution to the development of the University at Buffalo and the quality of life in the UB community.

President Satish K. Tripathi described recipient Jean Wactawski-Wende as a world-renowned epidemiologist who has brought great prominence to UB through her scholarly pursuits and academic excellence in the area of womens health.

A dedicated member of our university community for more than 30 years, Dr. Wactawski-Wende has made seminal contributions that have significantly impacted health care practice and disease prevention for women in the U.S. and around the world, he said.

Thanks to her tremendous leadership, she has further elevated the reputation of UB. Our university community, along with the many communities we serve, have been profoundly enriched by Dr. Wactawski-Wendes scholarship, teaching and service, and it is an honor to present the Presidents Medal to such a truly deserving recipient.

Of particular note is Wactawski-Wendes leadership role in the Womens Health Initiative (WHI), the largest longitudinal study of womens health in the United States. In 1993, she was part of the team that spearheaded UBs successful bid to become one of the federally funded studys 16 original vanguard clinical centers. Since the inception of the WHI, UB has received more than $30 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health to investigate health issues impacting postmenopausal women.

Among the WHIs major discoveries was the groundbreaking finding that intake of combined estrogen plus progestin was associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and invasive breast cancer. That research, on which Wactawski-Wende served as a co-principal investigator, changed the use of hormone therapy in older women worldwide, potentially saving countless lives.

Through UBs current $6.2 million award extension of the WHI, she has overseen the continuation of research into many diseases associated with aging, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, stroke and dementia. She is also administering new studies that focus on frailty and predictors of healthy aging.

For those of us who know and have worked closely with Dr. Wactawski-Wende, we readily recognize the magnitude and excellence of her contributions to academic medicine, said Michael E. Cain, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB. She is an eminent and distinguished scholar and leader whose work, professional service, and stature in her discipline and research field are outstanding and continue to grow.

An internationally recognized womens health expert and advocate, Donnica L. Moore is president of Sapphire Womens Health Group, a multimedia firm that educates women about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. A pioneering physician, Moore utilizes public speaking and multiple media platforms including her own website and podcast to share impactful health information in laypersons terms.

She will receive a SUNY Honorary Doctorate in Science.

Dr. Moores significant accomplishments associated with women's health set an inspiring example for our university community and reflect the values of both UB and the SUNY system, Tripathi said.

Breaking barriers to educate women about an array of health-related topics, she has demonstrated a sustained and dedicated commitment to the well-being of women around the globe. One of UBs most distinguished alumni, Dr. Moore in utilizing accessible platforms to create broad access to sound, peer-reviewed medical information is enhancing lives in communities near and far.

A 1986 alumna of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Moore underwent residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Temple University, followed by a year of family medicine training at Memorial Hospital of Burlington, New Jersey. The editor-in-chief of Womens Health for Life, she has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Women's Health and the Journal of the American Medical Womens Association, in addition to the board of directors of the Society for Womens Health Research, among other organizations.

Known for her relatable delivery and depth of expertise, Moore was the womens health contributor for NBCs Later Today and has appeared more than 800 times on such programs as The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Anderson Cooper Show and Good Morning America. Additionally, she has been a medical adviser or medical advisory board member for companies including DuPont and Helm Pharmaceuticals.

Richard A. Schatz is co-creator of the first coronary stent approved by the Food and Drug Administration for restenosis. Known as the Palmaz-Schatz stent, this life-saving device has been used to treat coronary artery disease in nearly 100 million patients worldwide since its approval in 1994. It is considered one of the top 10 medical device patents of the past 50 years.

He will receive a SUNY Honorary Doctorate in Science.

Dr. Schatz is widely known as the father of modern interventional cardiology for good reason, Tripathi said. Every day, his groundbreaking work is realized in operating rooms across the country and beyond. The stent he co-created spurred a revolution in the treatment of coronary artery disease and, 30 years later, it has had an immeasurable impact on health care.

By contributing to society through his biomedical innovations and inventions, Dr. Schatz has improved the lives of tens of millions of people while embodying the ideals of our university community and our university system.

A New York native, Schatz is the research director of cardiovascular interventions at the Scripps Clinic and director of gene and stem cell therapy. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology; in 2019, he received the Fritz J. And Dolores H. Russ Prize, which recognizes biomedical engineering achievements that have significantly improved the human condition. He is also the recipient of the Barton Haynes Lifetime Scholar Award from Duke University Medical Center.

Schatz attended UB in the early 1970s before gaining early admission to Duke Medical School, then completed his cardiology training at Brooke Army Medical Center. Throughout his career, he has maintained a strong affinity for UB, crediting the universitys faculty and curriculum for inspiring him to pursue a career in medicine.

Company Profile

North America Will Continue to Lead the Pack in Bone Marrow Transplantation Market

Increasing per-capita healthcare and private insurance expenditure is a major factor that is expected to maintain the high demand for technologically advanced treatment procedures, such as bone marrow transplantation, over the forecast period. Increasing blood cancer cases and geriatric population are among the key factors expected to boost the demand for bone marrow transplantation in North America.

The increasing prevalence of myeloma in the region is leading to an increase in the execution of bone marrow transplantation procedures through the allogeneic method. Companies engaged in stem cell therapies are expanding their product portfolio to offer sound treatment solutions for diseases caused while undergoing the allogeneic transplant method.

The availability of more than 90% unrelated donors and high healthcare expenditure are among the factors driving the overall bone marrow transplantation market in North America at present.

The American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplant reported an increasing prevalence of leukemia and lymphoma in patients aged 65 years and above, and this age group constituted 25-30% of the total number of bone marrow transplantation recipients in 2014.

In 2015, the Senate and House of Representatives of the US reauthorized the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005, which led to an increase in the US unrelated donors registry to 200,000 donors.

Germany Will Steer Europes Market for Bone Marrow Transplantation

Rise in per capita GDP is expected to improve the healthcare expenditure in countries such as Germany and Spain. Government policymakers are forcing healthcare providers and public payers to disclose the cost charged and reimbursed to maintain price transparency. Healthcare organizations in Germany spend most of their research funding on adult stem cell research.

Furthermore, Germany spends 11.3% of its GDP on healthcare, which is above the global average. This, in turn, has led to the presence of better healthcare facilities and more advanced research findings on various healthcare issues such as bone marrow transplantation.

Among the 680 centers throughout the Europe, 226 (35%) centers are dedicated to autologous bone marrow transplantation in 2014, with most of the transplants intended for non-malignant disorders. These factors are expected to drive the bone marrow transplantation market in Europe.

Stem cell treatment in the UAE sees ‘favorable’ outcomes for coronavirus patients – CNBC

A new treatment that helps to relieve coronavirus symptoms could be brought to market in three months' time if further trials go well, according to a researcher involved in the project.

"It's very early to say at this stage," said Dr.Fatima al-Kaabi, head of hematology and oncology at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in the United Arab Emirates.

"We've been happy that our initial safety results are promising, that's why we're heading into the next phase, of effectiveness of this treatment," she told CNBC's Hadley Gamble on Monday.

"If all ... went well and it worked well, then I would propose ... three months' time," she said, when asked how quickly the treatment, which was developed by doctors and researchersat the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, could reach the market.

To date, there are no known vaccines or specific antiviral medicines against Covid-19.U.S. health officials say developing a vaccine will take at least 12 to 18 months.

The UAE has 14,163 cases and126 deaths due to the coronavirus, based on data from Johns Hopkins University.

The remedy uses a "minimally invasive" method where a Covid-19 patient's stem cells are extracted, activated and turned into a fine mist to be inhaled. This alleviates symptoms such as shortness of breath and possibly coughing, said Dr. al-Kaabi.

"It is hypothesized to have its therapeutic effect by regenerating lung cells and modulating the immune response to keep it from overreacting to the COVID-19 infection and causing further damage to healthy cells,"the UAE's ministry of health and preventionsaid a statement.

Some 73 patients with moderate to severe symptoms received this treatment, and all were "successfully treated and cured," the statement said, adding that none reported "immediate adverse effects." Around a quarter of these patients were intubated and in the intensive care unit.

The treatment was given along with "conventional medical intervention" and will not replace established protocols, according to the statement.

"We're hopeful," said Dr. al-Kaabi, noting that the results of further trials on the efficacy of the treatment will only be out a couple of weeks' time. "We've seen (a) favorable outcome."

Another treatment for the coronavirus, an antiviral drug from Gilead Sciences, has been in the spotlight following positive preliminary results from trials. America's Food and DrugAdministration granted the medicine emergency use authorization last week. That means doctors can administerremdesivir to patients hospitalized with Covid-19, even though the drug has not undergone the same FDA review as other treatments.

Separately, researchers cut short a study testing anti-malaria drug chloroquine as a potential Covid-19 treatment last month. The drug gained widespread international attention after two small studies published in France found the coronavirus infection cleared a lot faster for patients taking it when compared to a control group.

However, citing a high risk of death, scientists have now scrapped the trials, warning it should prompt some degree of skepticism from the public toward enthusiastic claims of the drug. President Donald Trump had touted chloroquine as a potential "game changer" in the fight against the virus.

Coronavirus Update: Baptist Hospital Patient Credits Stem Cell Treatment With Saving Her Life – CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave Baptist Health approval to test a stem cell treatment on COVID-19 patients and so far its come back with positive results.

The treatment has proven successful with three patients.

One of those patients, Ruth Ramirez says it saved her life.

Ramirez was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon.

They saved my life. They definitely saved my life, said Ramirez.

Ramirez recently received stem cells from an umbilical cord known as mesenchymal cells.

Mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to reduce cytokine levels, said doctor Guenther Koehne.

Baptist Hospital says patients like Ramirez showed a reduction of their oxygen requirement from 100% to less than 50% within days of the infusion, accompanied by a significant reduction in levels of various key circulating inflammatory markers.

I couldnt breathe. I had a fever a headache I was nauseous, said Ramirez.

Ruth, an employee of the Miami Cancer Institute, tested positive for COVID-19 back on April 7th. She was admitted to the ICU and ended up on a ventilator fighting for her life.

Knowing she may lose consciousness she gave her sister power of attorney. That is when doctors Koehne and Javier Perez Fernandez approached the family about this FDA approved experimental therapy.

Im a person who jumps. I jump with hope with the best outcome there is on the other side. I think she took that into consideration with my characteristic and said Ruth would probably do this.

According to friends, Ruth was in ICU for three weeks, on a ventilator, and unable to breathe on her own.

All that time, she was away from her two small kids. That was several days ago.

On Friday, she was discharged.

To be here in this room, alone, and not being able to hold them. It was hard you know its hard.

As soon as they told me that I was going home I was like what?? And that I tested negative again I was like wait!! That changed my mood completely

Still fuzzy on the timeline, Ruth says shes unsure where along the way she received the treatment but is thankful for the doctors and wants others to know there is hope.

You know I hear the bells here all the time the eye of the tiger thats the song that you walk out of when you come out with coronavirus. Its such a pleasure hearing it all the time now. More than I heard it yesterday.

Not only did the doctors step up, but so did her co-workers who set up this Ruthie-strong go fund me page to help with bills and expenses.

They also helped take care of her family.

They would send food to them. Groceries. My kids were taken care of my sister was taken care of. She didnt have to leave from the house.

Theyre just amazing.

The University of Miami is also working on a clinical trial using mesenchymal cells which we reported on in April.
