The competition, which will award $10 million in total, is funded in large part through a $7.5 million leadership gift from Ken Griffin, Founder and CEO of Citadel. "I am proud to join The Michael J. The three winning projects represent unique and innovative approaches to tracer development:

The three winning teams in the Ken Griffin Alpha-synuclein Imaging Competitionwere awarded a combined $8.5 million dollars. The team that makes the greatest progress during the next two years on an imaging tracer will be awarded an additional $1.5 million to continue work to bring this game-changing tool to fruition.

Foundation's Longstanding Commitment to Find Elusive Tracer in Parkinson's DiseaseThe imaging tracer would be used in a PET scan to visualize alpha-synuclein a protein that clumps in the brains of nearly all 6 million people worldwide who live with Parkinson's. Scientists believe this clumping harms cells and results in symptoms of the disease. Today, these clumps are visible only through post-mortem tissue analysis. This is a foremost challenge in diagnosing the disease and monitoring its progression. The ability to visualize alpha-synuclein in the living brain could accelerate the development of new therapies for Parkinson's and be an important new diagnostic tool for physicians.

"The potential of this tracer is immense. Instead of relying on symptoms to diagnose Parkinson's, physicians could look at what is happening in the brain, in real time, paving the way for earlier diagnosis," explains MJFF CEO Todd Sherer, PhD. "And researchers developing therapies to target alpha-synuclein will be able to see how well their drug is working. An alpha-synuclein imaging tracer would increase the odds of success for therapies in trials today."

The Ken Griffin Alpha-synuclein Imaging Competition builds on MJFF's longstanding support of alpha-synuclein tracer research. In 2011, Jamie Eberling, PhD, vice president of research programs at MJFF, organized a consortium to foster the development of an alpha-synuclein imaging agent, and MJFF has funded this area of research for more than a decade. In 2016, to spur additional development, MJFF announced a $2-million prize for the first team to show clinical evidence of a tracer and make it available to the research community at large. Today, thanks in large part to MJFF and its partners, numerous teams in industry and academia have joined the effort to develop an alpha-synuclein imaging agent.

Mesoblast sees lasting need for COVID treatment beyond a vaccine – Sydney Morning Herald

Mesoblast is hoping its flagship product remestemcel-L will be shown to relieve acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19 patients. The company is running a phase 3 trial of the product in US hospitals, but the research is still in its early stages, with a pilot study of the project looking at only 12 patients.

The US Data Safety Monitoring board, which reviews clinical data, had selected a date in early September to complete an initial review of Mesoblast's phase 3 trial, the company said. There are no approved treatments for this kind of respiratory distress, and it is not yet known whether its product will prove safe and effective in a large group of patients.

Dr Itescu said the company would know the results by the end of this calendar year. If the project is successful, the product could be manufactured in Australia for export into global markets to treat COVID patients around the world.

"We're tracking pretty much as expected," Dr Itescu said.

The company has also been working on getting the same product approved in the US for use in children who have graft-vs-host disease, a complication from bone marrow transplants.

The Food and Drug Administration will review data about the effectiveness of the treatment on August 13. Dr Itescu said the regulator would advise whether the product has received approval before September 30.

Reviews of these two projects could have large implications for Mesoblast's future.

The company, which has been backed by high-profile investors including billionaire Alex Waislitz, has seen its shares turbocharged by updates on its COVID research in recent months. They jumped more than 5 per cent again on Thursday, trading at $3.84 by mid-afternoon.

The business generated $US2.1 million from customers in the June quarter and had $19.6 million in operating expenses.

UAE leads Covid-19 research in the Middle East – The National

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the UAEs efforts to combat its spread and prepare for a post-lockdown reality have made it a positive example for the region and the world.

Public health officials have carried out nearly 5 million coronavirus tests over the past six months a remarkable achievement in a country with a population of 9 million. This mass-testing strategy has curbed the spread of the virus and protected the population.

Another pillar of the Emirates success thus far is the willingness to invest in local expertise and drive resources towards Covid-19 research. In May, QuantLase Imaging Lab, which is part of International Holdings Company in Abu Dhabi, announced it had developed a rapid-testing technology capable of diagnosing coronavirus in mere minutes.

The Covid-19 screenings use a diffractive phase interferometry (DPI) test, which can detect early signs of the body fighting a virus. A centre has been set up on the border between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to facilitate travel into the latter, where a negative coronavirus test remains a requirement for entry.

The facility carries out thousands of tests a day, with more DPI screening centres set to open soon.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are also the first cities in the world to commence Phase III trials for a World Health Organisation-enlisted coronavirus vaccine. More than 10,000 people have volunteered for the final-stage trials, which aim to identify antibodies that provide immunity against the virus. Only three out of 20 coronavirus vaccines are currently in Phase III trials globally.

While the world awaits a successful vaccine, the Emirates is developing new treatments locally. In May, Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre announced it had produced a stem cell therapy treatment that helps to alleviate Covid-19 symptoms. The centre has thus far treated 2,000 patients free of charge.

This week, a one-month study of coronavirus immunity was launched in Abu Dhabi. The tests used will detect whether a person has been infected with coronavirus in the past, providing scientists with data on how widespread infections have been, as well as the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers. Such results will be instrumental in designing future public health policies.

The ground-breaking developments have been made easier by the fact that the UAE was already heavily focused on becoming a leading centre for medical research in general. Now, it is facilitating advancement in other areas of medicine, demonstrating the synergies that can form when developing a global medical hub.

The UAEs experience thus far provides an important lesson for public policymaking: that tackling challenges as daunting as a viral pandemic takes long-term planning and investment in strategic sectors. The same qualities are required in order to deal with a pandemics aftermath.

Ghadan 21, a set of large-scale reforms and projects launched last year by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has helped to diversify the economy and develop non-oil sectors. When the pandemic struck, the country already had a solid healthcare infrastructure.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the UAEs founding. Seen through the larger lens of human history, five decades is a very short period of time. But as the UAEs pandemic experience shows, no matter how far back a nations history stretches, it must make use of the time it has to prepare for a brighter future.

Purpose: To summarize current surgical techniques for treating primary macular holes (MHs). Methods: We reviewed publications detailing surgical approaches to primary MHs, briefly described their protocols, and outlined their results. Results: Currently, the technique for primary MH repair is pars plana vitrectomy, removing the posterior cortical vitreous, stripping the epiretinal membranes, and ending with intraocular gas tamponade. The evident benefit of peeling off the internal limiting membrane (ILM) was clearly shown for MHs at stages 2 to 4 by achieving an anatomical closure rate of > 90%, even in large MH up to 650 m. Newer MH surgical techniques include modification of ILM flap techniques, placing an autologous scaffolding of tissue within the hole, and cell therapy has shown to increase the closure rate of large and chronic macular holes, resulting in modest functional improvement in complicated MHs. Conclusion: Since the turn of the century, the success rate of modern macular surgery has increased, even for large and chronic MHs. There seems to be no limit to novel concepts in MH surgery, which range from anatomical closure to those proposing natural restoration of visual function via stem cell therapy.
