Lymphatic System Discovered To Play Key Role in Hair Regeneration – Technology Networks

Given the amount of wear and tear its subjected to on a daily basis, the skin has a phenomenal ability to replenish itself. Spread throughout it are small reservoirs of stem cells, nested within supportive microenvironments called niches, which keep a tight rein on this repair process. Too much tissue might cause problems like cancer, while too little might accelerate aging.

Until now, scientists were uncertain whether the stem cells themselves could instruct other stem cells to form new skin by reshaping their niche. But new research in Science, led by Elaine Fuchs, the Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor, indicates that stem cells can indeed influence tissue regeneration. The study identifies a molecular coordination tool used by stem cells to signal across niches.

The researchers also discovered a new component of the niche: a specialized type of vessel called lymphatic capillaries, which transport immune cells and drain excess fluids and toxins from tissues. These capillaries form an intimate network around the stem cell niche within each hair follicle, the study showed, thereby interconnecting all its niches.

By turning the skin completely transparent, says postdoctoral fellow Shiri Gur-Cohen, we were able to reveal the complex architecture of this network of tubes.

Hair-follicle stem cells control the behavior of lymphatic capillaries by secreting molecules that act as an on-off switch for drainage, the scientists found, enabling them to control the composition of fluids and cells in the surrounding locale and ultimately synchronize regeneration across the tissue.

The involvement of the lymphatic system in this process is a new concept, says Fuchs, and might potentially provide new therapeutic targets for lymph-related conditions such as wound-healing defects and hair loss.

Stem cell transplants approved for people with MS in Scotland – MS Trust

The Scottish Health Technologies Group (SHTG), which gives advice to NHS Scotland on new treatments, has approved autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) for people with highly active relapsing remitting MS (RRMS).

After carrying out an in-depth review, the SHTG concluded that AHSCT should be considered as a treatment option for people with RRMS who continue to have relapses and show MS activity on MRI scans despite taking the most effective disease modifying drugs. They also emphasised that it was important for people to be aware of the risks and demanding nature of the treatment as well as the benefits.

SHTG looked at the evidence for using AHSCT in MS and invited submissions from patient groups, including the MS Trust. In our report, we highlighted the impact that RRMS has on all aspects of life, the experiences of people with MS who have benefited from NHS treatment with AHSCT in England, and argued that people living in Scotland should not be denied access to this treatment option.

What does this mean for me?

At the moment, there are no centres in Scotland offering stem cell treatments for MS. Two centres in England (Sheffield and London Collaborative Group) provide AHSCT as an NHS treatment for a limited number of people who meet strict eligibility criteria.

The decision from Scottish Health Technologies Group to approve AHSCT is very welcome news but this is thefirst step towards making this treatment available in Scotland. NHS Scotland is required to consider this advice and we will continue to press for access to AHSCT for people meeting the eligibility criteria in Scotland.

Russell Brand Defends Lewis Hamiltons Vegan Hypocrisy and It Will Make You Think – LIVEKINDLY

Russell Brand has defended Lewis Hamilton against comments calling him a hypocrite.

In a recent Instagram Story, Hamilton wrote about the climate crisis. He said, Im sad right now with the thought about where this world is going, and asked his friends and followers to give up meat and dairy to go vegan.

He said,it is the only way to save our planet today.

However, Hamilton drives racing cars for a living, and Formula One is an industry that, as a whole, is a while away from becoming carbon neutral.

Hamilton has said he plans to be carbon neutral himself by the end of the year, but the nature of his sport prompted many to speak up and label the athlete a hypocrite.

In Brands view, whether or not Hamilton is hypocritical is irrelevant because most of us are. Hes trying to communicate, said Brand in a new YouTube video. Why wouldnt he communicate?

It really just highlights the impotence that we all share,he continued. Operating within systems and cultures that, in a sense, yield continually to the invisible power of commerce. The comedian and podcast host added, none of us can make a significant difference as individuals.

But that doesnt mean we shouldnt try. Its great sentiment to do those things, he adds. Brand himself follows a plant-based diet. He has been a vegetarian since he was 14 and an on-off vegan since 2011.

In Brands view, real change will only happen at the level of global regulation. Countries will have to pass laws against using single-use plastic or fuels that harm the planet.

He believes its the current system that makes people unable to see Hamiltons point of view.

We can all see armageddon, we can all see the apocalypse, but we cant see Lewis Hamiltons carbon-neutral, vegan, wonderland. Because its very difficult to envisage that when our current systems seem so immobile, he said.

He added, Lewis Hamilton is doing his best. Hes alright. I met him before a couple of times and hes a nice bloke.

In his view, accusations of hypocrisy are a way of trying to exclude a person from a conversation. He said, if the price of entry to the public debate is personal perfection, then were [expletive].

The price should be a shared aspiration to improve the world, he added. To create a better collective, to create ideals for us to move towards being forgiving towards one another when we inevitably slip.

Surely thats what we should be doing instead of condemning individuals, he continued.

Toddler’s clinginess turned out to be cancer which parents discovered on Google – Mirror Online

A mum and dad say doctors said their daughter's clinginess was caused by a virus - but it was actually a rare cancer.

It only came to light when they discovered a potential diagnosis on Google.

Laura Farmer-Maia, 39, and husband Tiago Maia, 40, noticed their three-year-old daughter Beatriz had become clingy and unhappy last July.

They visited their GP and A&E several times, when doctors allegedly insisted she had a virus and prescribed antibiotics.

However several months later, when the toddler's symptoms hadn't improved, the worried parents Googled her symptoms - and were horrified to discover that the results potentially pointed to neuroblastoma.

This is an aggressive childhood cancer with a 40% chance of long-term survival.

The couple, from London, pushed the GP for more tests, and blood tests showed something was wrong, so Beatriz was sent urgently to hospital.

He refused to leave until she seen by a specialist - and medics finally discovered a lump above her kidney and diagnosed her with neuroblastoma in September last year.

The parents-of-two, who do not blame the doctors for their mistakes, are now speaking out for the first time to raise awareness of the difficulty of diagnosing cancers in children.

Laura, who works in advertising, said: "Before she was diagnosed, Beatriz was quite naughty but when she reached two, she suddenly became clingy and picky with her food, and had a fever all the time.

"We took her to the GP who believed it was a virus and after recurrent visits they gave her some antibiotics to cover for a potential bacterial cause, which didn't have any effect.

"Beatriz started to complain that her legs hurt so we took her to A&E, where they did some more tests and still said it might be a virus.

"It's hard to get a diagnosis right when a child is too young to explain how they're feeling, but in the back of our minds we knew it was something bad.

"We want to spread awareness of the difficulty of diagnosing cancer in young children - if your child doesn't seem right, you should push for further tests."

Tiago, originally from Portugal, added: "I went back to the GP and pushed our doctor for more tests, which showed something was wrong and the GP sent us urgently to hospital.

"At the hospital, they twice said it was likely to be a virus and I refused to leave until I saw a specialist.

"I waited for three hours until a more senior doctor was free, and then Beatriz was examined by different specialists who admitted her to do all kinds of tests and observations including X-rays and ultrasounds - it was the last one that confirmed there was a lump.

"When my fears from Google turned out to be true, it was very strange because even though my life had just flipped upside down, I was almost relieved to be right - it was weird and confusing."

Beatriz was referred straight to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where they carried out further tests including scans, blood tests and biopsies.

She began chemotherapy just a week after being diagnosed and underwent eight gruelling rounds of chemo over the next 18 months.

Doctors then carried out a stem cell transplant to regenerate bone marrow destroyed by high dose chemo, which meant Beatriz couldn't leave the hospital for eight weeks.

Tiago, a design director, said: "I was quite scared when Beatriz was diagnosed because my mum and dad had only recently died from cancer - I thought of the worst.

"Everything moved so quickly and we all felt frightened as they carried out the tests.

"Doctors found that the cancer had spread across her body, so she began chemotherapy just weeks after being diagnosed.

"We were told the treatment would last 18 months which was a massive shock to us.

"A week after Beatriz started chemotherapy she massively improved, but it was tricky being in hospital at first.

"Now, she still has periods of discomfort but sometimes she's happy to be in hospital because she has toys and people to come and play with her."

Laura, who works in advertising, added: "The stem cell transplant was a hard time for us all because we had to spend a lot of time apart from our other daughter, Clara, six.

"Beatriz was diagnosed in Clara's first week of school and it was difficult because that was supposed to be an exciting time for her."

After more scans and hopes of an all-clear, doctors found more metastatic growths still remaining in Beatriz's head, which meant that the cancer hadn't fully cleared up and she had relapsed.

The brave youngster is now undergoing immunotherapy and is due to start a six month medical trial on the NHS at Great Ormond Street Hospital, called the Beacon Trial.

It is uncertain whether the trial will work and, even if Beatriz goes into remission, relapse rates are high but her parents are determined to do everything they can to stop the cancer from returning.

Laura and Tiago are now trying to raise 200,000 to help get their daughter into remission or to keep the cancer away if her treatment goes well.

The money is hoped to go towards further treatment, or if Beatriz gets the all-clear, a special vaccine in New York which helps keep the disease away.

Laura said: "After the stem cell transplant, the end was almost in sight but then she relapsed.

"We're afraid that the cancer will get worse and worse and want to raise money to help get her into remission - the ideal outcome is that the trial works and clears the disease.

"Luckily, compared to other two-year-olds, Beatriz has suffered less side effects with treatment and despite losing her curly hair she's powering through."
