Cerus Corporation Announces a Five-Year Tender Award by the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service for INTERCEPT Blood Systems – BioSpace

CONCORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cerus Corporation (Nasdaq:CERS) today announced it has been awarded a five-year tender by the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Services (BTS) for INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets. The Hong Kong Red Cross BTS is the only public institution providing blood to all hospitals, public and private, in Hong Kong.

Following a thorough selection process, we are pleased to be selected by the Hong Kong Red Cross BTS to supply INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets, said Pascal Maillard, Cerus vice president of commercial operations for the Asia Pacific region. INTERCEPT for platelets provides a robust, broad-spectrum inactivation, reducing the risks of transfusion-transmitted infections and thereby enhancing patient care.

This is an important contract for Cerus, continued Maillard. The Hong Kong Red Cross BTS is a member of the influential Asia Pacific Blood Network (APBN) and a key opinion leader globally. This tender award presents a unique opportunity to expand the use of INTERCEPT in Asia-Pacific, a region that represents a significant market growth opportunity for Cerus.

The tender award builds upon the prior experience of the Hong Kong Red Cross BTS with the INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets. The Hong Kong Red Cross BTS, in collaboration with the Queen Mary Hospital, conducted a clinical study successfully transfusing INTERCEPT treated platelet components prepared without leukocyte reduction, without bacterial screening, and without gamma irradiation to allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) patients (Sim, Tsoi et al. 2019).

This innovative study conducted by the Hong Kong Red Cross BTS and Queen Mary Hospital has the potential to change how patients are supported with platelet transfusions, said Dr. Laurence Corash, Cerus chief scientific officer. The study indicated that INTERCEPT treatment could potentially replace leukocyte filtration, a common practice to reduce the incidence of febrile transfusion reactions, alloimmunization, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The INTERCEPT platelet system has already demonstrated widespread replacement of bacterial screening, gamma irradiation, and CMV serology in the EU and U.S.

The Hong Kong Red Cross BTS recently completed renovations and is a state-of-the-art facility that manufactures approximately 40,000 platelet doses per year, a portion of which will be treated with INTERCEPT.

Crowdfunding to the rescue for this cancer patient – Social News XYZ

Home IANS Life Crowdfunding to the rescue for this cancer patient

Posted By: Gopi July 30, 2020

By Siddhi Jain

New Delhi, July 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) Cancer takes innumerable lives each year, and so does the unavailability of cancer treatment due to lack of funds. 33-year-old Nushafreen Palsetia, a software engineer based in Mumbai, was recently diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer. Despite a relapse, what helped was life-saving support pouring from over 1,700 donors.

Nushafreen was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in April 2019. After a year of enduring aggressive treatment, she tried to get back to her normal life and work. Unfortunately, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), cancer relapsed in her liver in May 2020 which was an unexpected major shock, leaving her and all of her family overwhelmed.

Doctors planned to perform an autologous (her own stem cells) bone marrow transplant in India after the chemotherapy but further tests showed involvement of the bone marrow as well. Hence, her treating doctor recommended the modern CAR-T Cell therapy treatment, available only in the USA, UK, Israel, and a few European countries.

Nushafreen's family found Israel as the most affordable option as compared to all other countries offering the treatment. They reached out to Sheba Medical Centre in Israel which estimated the medical expenses as 200,000 USD (approximately Rs 1.5 crore). The treatment will require Nushafreen to be hospitalized for a month or more for the response to treatment and immediate follow up.

As Nushafreen's family couldn't afford the high medical expenses, an ImpactGuru crowdfunding campaign was initiated. In two weeks, Nushafreen's ImpactGuru.com Page has raised over Rs 1 crore from 1750 donors. The platform raises money online for medical expenses via crowdfunding such as cancer, transplants, and accidents.

According to the co-founder and CEO of the healthcare crowdfunding platform, Piyush Jain, "Crowdfunding is driven by a culture of generosity, it allows people to raise money quickly in a hassle free manner without any payback liability. This is a new record for our platform with a single patient's family being able to raise more than Rs 1 crore. We hope Nushafreen recovers soon and more patients come forward to utilize our platform in their time of need to get the best available treatment for critical illnesses."

Scientists to speed creation of pig vaccines – FarmingUK

Scientists want to combat African swine fever, a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease, and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, found in commercial herds

Scientists are developing a method to speed the creation of vaccines for devastating pig diseases, such as African swine fever.

British researchers are aiming to establish a reliable, large-scale system to develop and test vaccines for viral infections.

Stem cell technology will be used to develop a source of white blood cells, identical to those affected by disease in pigs, which can be used to develop vaccines containing live virus.

The team, involving scientists from the Roslin Institute and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), are particularly investigating control strategies against African swine fever virus.

Results from the study are expected to shed light on how diseases such as ASF target white blood cells, and how the cells respond to infection.

The approach seeks to improve on current vaccine testing methods, which include using blood cells derived from other animal species, or from other types of cells that resemble blood cells.

Stem cells those in early stage of development, which can differentiate into blood cells hold promise as a source of blood cells as they are likely to be free of contamination with disease, leading to accurate, reliable results.

Genetic modification techniques may also enable researchers to develop more efficient production of blood cells.

This approach may also enable scientists to explore whether lab-produced blood cells are able to contain high levels of virus, making them effective for vaccine development.

In addition, the application of genome editing technology to blood and virus cells could aid understanding of the role of genes in infectivity, immune response, and resistance to disease.

Dr Tom Burdon, research group leader at Roslin Institute said: "Stem cell technology applied to vaccine development can not only speed the delivery of results but limit the need for research involving animals.

"We hope that our efforts will aid the search for effective vaccines against serious diseases, which affect millions of animals and incur great cost to farmers."

Arson at The Way Christian Center and The Shortage of Stem Cell Donors of Color – KPFA – 94.1FM

Davey D brings us audio from todays press conference held at The Way Christian Center in Berkeley Ca. Less than 12 hours after The Way Christian Center placed a Black Lives Matter banner, someone set fire to several trash cans positioned at the back of the church. The act of arson, damaged a portion of the building (see photos below) and has created fear and anger in the community.

Later we speak with Jess Tom and Carol Gillespie about treatment for blood-related cancers, the shortage of stem cell donors of color and the need to improve the registries. Seventy percent of patients wont have a match in their families and must find an unrelated donor. Patients are more likely to match donors who share the same ethnic background, but the lack of diversity on the Be The Match national registry makes it difficult for patients to find one. The only way he can beat the illness is with a stem cell transplant.

In order to have a stem cell transplant, first a stem cell match for Andrew must be found. No one in Andrews family is a match. As being a match is genetically based, Andrews stem cell match will most likely be someone who is Chinese.Chinese donors only make up 0.7% of the national donor registry, leaving him with only a 43% chance of finding a perfect match.

Background: Tuberculosis is a rare but life-threatening complication in patients who received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Early identification and intervention are essential to prevent severe complications. Case Presentation: We report two pediatric patients who developed tuberculosis after receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for thalassemia major among 330 recipients between January 2012 and August 2019. Patient A presented with pulmonary tuberculosis and patient B presented with lymph node tuberculosis mimicking post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder associated with EpsteinBarr virus reactivation. Patient Bs condition was deteriorated, and shortly after the initiation of anti-tuberculosis therapy, the patient was found to have disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis. Patient B was also found to have tuberculous granulomas, an uncommon manifestation of tuberculosis causing severe airway obstruction. Both patients developed critical respiratory failure and required mechanical ventilation; however, they recovered with almost full resolution of pulmonary lesions after multiple treatment adjustments. Conclusion: Tuberculosis must be carefully evaluated in all pediatric patients that receive hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, regardless of the identification of other pathogens. Prophylactic tuberculosis therapy should be considered for high-risk pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients from tuberculosis-endemic regions.
